No Surgery!!

Rejoice and make a joyful noise. Little Melanie does not need to have heart surgery at this time. Yeah!! The Dr.s discussed her situation and decided that since her PDA is not causing any problems and that her breathing is going so well (a little different than Sunday night) that they will let the PDA be. If she were to develop any symptoms from the PDA not closing they will then re-evaluate the surgery. A huge part of the surgery is that she would have to go back on the conventional vent (due to the anesthetics), which could make the empty space in her left lung even bigger. So the Lord has answered our prayers by giving her the strength for now to stay on her CPAP and continue to grow those lungs. Her breathing was very good today by the way. I was able to hold her for 3 1/2 hours...take that Jeff :) Her transition from and back to her isolet went very well. They want us to hold her as much as she'll allow for right now. Anne told me today that the best thing we can do for her at this point is to hold her and to continue pumping. I'll try to explain the skin to skin concept. By holding Melanie, my body will pick up what it is that her body needs at the moment. My body will then produce that and pass it along to her through my milk. AMAZING!!! Another miracle God has given to us that I never knew about. So from now on while I'm at the hospital I'll be holding our little baby...at least as long as God continues to grace her with good health. We have truly been blessed in this journey we are on. Everyday (most days) we can marvel at how well she really is doing. If all goes well through the night, I think the Dr.s will order her to start feedings again tomorrow. 2ml every 3 hours. Yeah!!! Time to get some fatty milk into this skinny little body. Milk that has been perfectly created especially for Melanie with what she needs right now!

So happy for you, what a blessing to be told to hold her as much as possible:) We rejoice with you that she does not need surgery at this point, and pray that it remains this way.

Jeff and Nicki~ We continue to be amazed at the progress and "holding of her own" that little Melanie can do. Truly God's hand is upholding her; what more could we hope for!! Stay strong - there are many prayers on your behalf! Kiss your big girls for us, too.

That will be GREAT that you can hold her a lot of the time, Nicki. I hope and pray you are feeling well. Make sure you get YOUR rest and stay strong too.

Praying for you.

As for the advice on getting my rest...While holding Melanie for 3 hours there's not a lot to do. I forsee some naps in my future....Yeah!! I just have to find a more comfortable chair; maybe I'll have a start bringing in a pillow too :)

What wonderful news!! Our hearts are singing and rejoicing with yours! It made me think of Psalter #299
"My heart is fixed O God, A grateful song I raise;
Awake, O harp, in joyful strains, Awake, my soul, to praise."
I hope that the PDA will close on its own when it becomes necessary for Melanie's health.
It certainly is true as the Psalmist says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139). I didn't know that your body could sense from skin to skin contact what Melanie needs and then make and pass it to her through your milk...amazing, simply amazing. The more we learn of God's design of us, the more we stand in awe of Him!

Thanks much for your frequent updates, I check in on you and little Melanie frequently. You all are in our prayers. Trials such as yours take much grace and strength which it is obvious that you are receiving. We thank our Heavenly Father for showing us exactly that in your lives and pray that He will continue to bless you with it!
Love and prayers,
Cindi DJ and family

Praise God! He is holding little Melanie in the palm of his hand every moment. Nicki, how amazing about the breast milk. To think just by holding her, your body will know what to produce that is best for her. Miraculous is the only word I can think of and that barely describes the awesomeness of God and his creation. Hugs from us all! Lynn and rest of the Mossner clan.

kangaroo care (skin to skin) is great for you and the baby. seems like babies often do better when being held that way then laying in bed. praying that the pda closes with the meds and that the pnuemo begins to decrease in size. praying for you guys as you go through the rollar coaster ride of NICU.

What great news! God is great! We learned about your story from some friends and our hearts go out to you. Our son was in the NICU in April due to underdeveloped lungs but he weighed 7lbs 5ounces. The NICU was amazing and the nurses were wonderful. They treated Isaac like he was their own child~with love and compassion. Skin to skin is amazing~just ask the nurses, they have pillows for you to use. If you need anything at all, my husband and I would love to help~until then we will keep praying for Melanie and your family.
In Christ~Dave, Jodi and Isaac
